The Last of Us Multiplayer is still in development but might not be what you expect

Naughty Dog confirms that its multiplayer Last of Us offshoot is still being worked on, but it's not without issues, apparently.

Naughty Dog has reportedly scaled back the online multiplayer game it’s developing for The Last of Us. It is alleged to have made the decision after an external audit by fellow PlayStation studio, Bungie.

Sources have told Bloomberg that the development team has reduced in size in recent times, while the game itself may experience a fair few changes after Sony asked online multiplayer specialist Bungie to assess the current build.

“Bungie raised questions about the The Last of Us multiplayer project’s ability to keep players engaged for a long period of time, which led to the reassessment,” claims the report (via VGC).

Naughty Dog itself posted an update on The Last of Us multiplayer on Twitter on Friday 26 May 2023.

It highlighted the fact that the game needs “more time” in development. However, the positive news is that the (scaled back) team will continue to work on it.

Even better news is that Naughty Dog is also working on a “brand new single-player experience”. There’s no word yet on what that might be, but it’s likely to be an all-new intellectual property rather than the long-rumoured new Uncharted game.

Bungie working on new game too

As for Bungie itself, it was recently revealed that the studio behind Destiny, Destiny 2 and the original Halo games is working on another first-person shooter for PlayStation 5 in the form of Marathon.

This is a reboot of a classic FPS made in the early 90s by Bungie for the Apple Mac. There’s no release date for it as yet.
