Xbox Games with Gold free games for August 2023: what do you get this month?

Microsoft rewards Xbox Live Gold (and Game Pass) subscribers a couple of free games each month. Here are the latest.

And so it comes to pass – quite literally. After many years of giving away free games along with online play, Xbox Live Gold is coming to an end. From 14 September, the service will become Xbox Game Pass Core and instead of a couple of free games, subscribers will be able to play a selection of curated titles from a library of “more than 25”.

But until then, there are still two more “Games with Gold” for you to download and play in August – which you can read about below.

It’s also worth noting that Xbox Live Gold subscribers will automatically become Xbox Game Pass Core members for the same monthly cost. It will continue to offer online multiplayer play and discounts in the Xbox Store, as well as that pool of games we’ve already mentioned.

Alternatively, you can consider upgrading to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate for £12.99 per month and also access to more than 400 Xbox games, Xbox Cloud Gaming, EA Play, and PC Game Pass (with 100s of Windows games).

You can even still get it for the pre-July price of £10.99 by purchasing a monthly code from some stores, including Amazon.

For now, here are the latest and last Games with Gold from Xbox.

Xbox Games with Gold games list for August 2023

These are the games available to Xbox Live Gold and Game Pass Ultimate members this month.

Blue Fire

  • Available from 1 to 31 August 2023
  • Usually worth $19.99

Blue Fire is a very stylish 3D platformer with plenty of combat and a lengthy campaign (of around 20 hours). A fine way for Xbox Live Gold to go out.

Inertial Drift

  • Available from 1 to 31 August 2023
  • Usually worth $19.99

Inertial Drift is a good old fashioned arcade racer with a great 90s-inspired art style and slick presentation. It also has some cunning twin-stick drift mechanics, hence the name.

You can also still download When the Past was Around until 15 August 2023, one of last month’s free Games with Gold.

Can you still play old Xbox Live Games with Gold games?

Even after Xbox Live Gold ends and becomes Xbox Game Pass Core, you will be able to play any of the games you redeemed throughout the life of the previous subscription, as long as you remain a paying member.

What games will you get with Xbox Game Pass Core?

Xbox promises more than 25 games that will be available to Xbox Game Pass Core members. It will announce the full list closer to the switchover date, but for now these are the titles it has confirmed so far:

  • Among Us
  • Descenders
  • Dishonored 2
  • Doom Eternal
  • Fable Anniversary
  • Fallout 4
  • Fallout 76
  • Forza Horizon 4
  • Gears 5
  • Grounded
  • Halo 5: Guardians
  • Halo Wars 2
  • Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice
  • Human Fall Flat
  • Inside
  • Ori & The Will of the Wisps
  • Psychonauts 2
  • State of Decay 2
  • The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited

Unlike the main Xbox Game Pass Console and Xbox Game Pass Ultimate plans, the games on Xbox Game Pass Core will only be updated once or twice a year.
