The Nintendo Switch version of Hogwarts Legacy has been delayed, which is bound to upset a fair few players who have been waiting to get their hands on the RPG set in the world of Harry Potter.

Warner Bros has confirmed that the Switch port, due for 25 July, will now not be available in stores until 14 November 2023.

The company retweeted a message from the official Hogwarts Legacy Twitter account, saying that the date shift is to ensure the game meets high expectations: “We know fans are looking forward to playing on Switch, therefore creating the best possible experience is our top priority,” it said. “Thank you for your patience.”

Hogwarts Legacy has been available on Xbox Series X/S, PS5 and PC since February this year. It was also released on last-generation consoles – PS4 and Xbox One – in May.

It has proved extremely popular, with sales exceeding even the loftiest of expectations, even though the game’s launch was not free from controversy. Harry Potter author JK Rowling’s views on transgender rights have prompted much debate on whether the game should be celebrated or not, although developer Avalanche Software has made some effort to introduce diversity and inclusivity into the story and its characters, contrary to the opinions of the franchise’s inventor.

That might be enough for Switch gamers, although we won’t now find out until nearer the Christmas holiday season. Certainly, those hoping to play in the Potterverse while on their summer holidays will have to find something else to do instead.
