Summer Game Fest coming back for another year – bye bye E3?

The return of the Summer Game Fest extravaganza has been confirmed for next year, with a 2024 event to rival or replace E3 once and for all.

After a hugely successful week, Summer Game Fest will return in 2024 and that surely sounds the death knell for E3. Indeed, it can be argued that, in the snazzy online events and more focused presentations, Geoff Keighley and the team have hit on a better format for an annual games show going forward.

This year, the whole thing kicked off with an excellent, two-hour showcase hosted by Keighley, which invited an audience to be there in person for the first time. It featured surprise guests, including Nicolas Cage, and debut some top tier games.

That was followed by several other, smaller presentations from indie publishers and media outlets – such as the Future Games Show – and then a mighty Xbox Games Showcase that hit just about every note in the right way with some stunning exclusives and premieres.

Ubisoft and Capcom rounded up proceedings with aplomb and anyone who’s into games has been left with optimism for a better coming year or so when it comes to major (and many minor) releases.

We will definitely welcome back Summer Game Fest next year, then. And are thrilled that its media and influencer-centric demo areas will return too. That’s not to say that it can’t coexist with E3, but we find it very difficult to believe that the more traditional show will be able to attract back the companies that caused its cancellation by their absence – not after such a strong showing by the alternative.

We don’t yet have an exact date for Summer Game Fest 2024 but suspect it’ll kick off on Thursday 6 June and run for a similar period, ending on Monday 10. Either that or it’ll go for the jugular and aim for the 10-14 June 2024 and replace E3 entirely.

We shall see in the coming months.
